Recap: Oakland vs. NY Yankees

Oakland, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - David Phelps and two New York relievers combined on a two-hit shutout of the Athletics as the Yankees snapped a seven- game losing streak in Oakland with a 7-0 victory on Friday.

Phelps (2-4), who had dropped his previous four starts, scattered two hits and three walks while fanning four over 6 2/3 innings.

"I was attacking guys," said Phelps. "The last couple of starts I was trying to be a little bit too fine. Today they gave me a little bit of a cushion (and) that was huge."

Brett Gardner, Ichiro Suzuki and Brian Roberts all had two hits and knocked in a run for New York, which earned its first win at O.co Coliseum since May 27, 2012. The Yankees have won four straight overall following a three-game sweep of the Seattle Mariners.

Sonny Gray (6-3) suffered back-to-back losses for the first time this year, as he surrendered three runs on seven hits over six frames.

Gray got into trouble early, giving up three straight singles to start the game. Jacoby Ellsbury drove in the first run with a base hit to left field, with the speedy Gardner narrowly beating Yoenis Cespedes' throw to the plate.

Mark Teixeira followed with a sacrifice fly, and even though the Yankees only came away with two in their first at-bat, they added another in their second when Gardner singled home Roberts.

Phelps retired 13 of the first 14 batters he faced, the only blemish coming on a one-out walk in the fourth.

The A's managed a walk and a single off him in the fifth, but Phelps got out of the jam by getting Andy Parrino to line out to center and Kyle Blanks to hit into a fielder's choice.

"Sometimes it goes that way," A's manager Bob Melvin said of the offense. "You get hits in bunches and other times it cools off. We have been in a little bit of a funk for maybe a week or so."

Four runs in the eighth off Jeff Francis all but sealed New York's win. Suzuki singled off the glove of Francis to plate Teixeira, and Roberts' single brought in Brian McCann and Suzuki, who came around on a Derek Norris error.

Kelly Johnson capped the frame with an RBI single, and New York's bullpen of Dellin Betances and Jose Ramirez combined to finish off the shutout.

Oakland had won 12 of the previous 16 meetings ... Ellsbury is riding a 17- game hitting streak ... The A's have been shut out three times this year ... Oakland began a 10-game homestand after going 5-4 on its most recent road trip.
