Recap: NY Mets vs. San Diego

Flushing, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Bobby Abreu went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI to lead the New York Mets over the San Diego Padres, 6-2, in the opener of a three-game series.

Abreu's vintage night at the plate backed a classic performance on the mound from Bartolo Colon, who set down 19 of the final 20 batters he faced to earn his fourth straight winning decision.

"(Abreu) has gotten big hits for us," said Mets manager Terry Collins. "We hit the ball hard tonight."

Colon (6-5) gave up two runs on four hits while fanning seven over 7 1/3 innings of work as New York earned just its second win in its last 10 games.

Andrew Cashner (2-6), in his second start since returning from the disabled list, was tagged for four runs on eight hits over six innings for the Padres, losers of five straight.

Rene Rivera accounted for all of San Diego's offense when he uppercutted a Colon offering over the wall in left for a two-run homer in the second frame.

"We're working hard up there at the plate," said Rivera. "(Colon) was aggressive, pounding the strike zone with fastballs, changeups and the slider."

The 41-year-old Colon bounced back by retiring 18 in a row, and Abreu, who turned 40 in March, sparked the New York offense.

Abreu scored the Mets' first two runs, getting them on the board in the second when he doubled and came around on Taylor Teagarden's opposite-field hit.

Abreu crossed the plate again in the fourth on Lucas Duda's one-hop double to the wall in left-center. Duda scored the go-ahead run on Matt den Dekker's ground-rule double two batters later.

With two on and no outs in the fifth, Chase Headley began a terrific double play with a diving stop down the third-base line to seemingly stop a Mets rally before it started, but Abreu followed with an RBI single to right.

New York added two more in the seventh, and again Abreu was involved. David Wright made it 5-2 with a sacrifice fly, and Abreu dribbled one through the middle to knock in Daniel Murphy.

Vic Black retired Carlos Quentin on a groundout to leave the bases full of Padres in the eighth, and Jeurys Familia worked around a leadoff double in the ninth.

Game Notes

The start of the game was delayed 1 hour, 56 minutes due to rain ... Abreu recorded four hits for the first time since May 30, 2011 ... Colon has not lost since May 6, a span of six starts ... Cashner is mired in a seven-game winless stretch ... The Padres are an NL worst 2-9 in June ... San Diego went 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position.
