Recap: Atlanta vs. Philadelphia

Atlanta, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - Reid Brignac's two-run triple capped a five- run 13th inning and sent Philadelphia to a 6-1 victory over Atlanta in Monday's opener of a three-game series.

David Hale (2-2) allowed Ben Revere a leadoff single and a steal of second, then Chase Utley was intentionally walked with one out ahead of Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman allowing a Ryan Howard grounder to skip through his legs to score Revere.

Marlon Byrd followed by driving in Utley with a single, both runners advanced on a wild pitch and Domonic Brown was given a free pass, then Brignac's liner to right was allowed to roll to the wall to plate Byrd and Brown for a 6-1 game.

"Sometimes these things happen. You have to suck it up and learn how to move on," said Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez. "This is the second time in the week our bullpen has had to go this long in extra innings."

Antonio Bastardo (4-3) worked the final two scoreless frames for the victory. Cole Hamels was on the hill for the first seven, fanning six and walking two while permitting five hits. His outing was ruined by Jonathan Papelbon allowing the tying run in the home ninth.

Brignac finished with three hits, while Howard hit a solo homer and scored twice for the Phillies, who have taken five of their last seven.

Freeman ended up a home run shy of a cycle and Andrelton Simmons drove in the lone run for the Braves, losers in four of their last six.

Howard greeted Atlanta starter Julio Teheran's second pitch of the second inning with a solo shot to dead center.

Revere went to the wall in center to rob Freeman of extra bases for the second out in the fourth, then Hamels fanned Teheran with two on in the fifth.

After a quiet sixth, the Braves appeared to have Hamels cornered in the seventh. Evan Gattis singled past third, Justin Upton doubled to left and Chris Johnson was plunked to load the bases with none out. Tommy LaStella lined to third, then Simmons grounded into a rally-killing 4-6-3 double play.

Jake Diekman allowed back-to-back two-out singles from B.J. Upton and Freeman in the eighth, but froze Gattis on a called third strike.

The Phillies put two on with two down in the ninth, but Brown fanned to end the threat and it cost the visitors dearly.

Papelbon gave up hits to Justin Upton and Johnson, before LaStella flied to left. Simmons then blooped a hit to right to score Upton. Philly's closer recovered to strike out pinch-hitter Ryan Doumit and Jason Heyward.

"All you can do is take care of the things you can control, like going out there and throwing up as many zeroes as you can," said Hamels. "You can't expect your offense to throw up numbers every game and to hit home runs every game."

Brown failed to glove a deep fly to left from Freeman with one away in the 10th, and the Atlanta outfielder ended up at third after the ball caromed off the top of the wall. Gattis was given a free pass, then Justin Upton popped to first and Justin De Fratus fanned Johnson swinging to keep the game tied.

In the FCS Huddle: 2014 Big South Preview

The Flames have been so close to making the FCS playoff field over the last decade that they are ready to rewrite the ending. They tied Coastal Carolina for the Big South championship last season, but lost the head-to-head meeting in overtime, and ultimately fell oh-so-short of the postseason.
