Recap: NY Yankees vs. Toronto

Bronx, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Carlos Beltran knocked in two runs to back a strong start from David Phelps, and the New York Yankees maintained their home supremacy of the Toronto Blue Jays with a 6-4 win to complete a three-game sweep.

Phelps (3-4) went seven innings and allowed two runs on six hits with seven strikeouts while tying a career high of 115 pitches.

"We had some big hits and tacked some runs on tonight," said Yankees manager Joe Girardi. "Big performance from David Phelps. He did a great job."

The Yankees have now won 16 straight games against Toronto in New York, marking the longest streak since the Blue Jays took 16 straight at home against Baltimore from Aug. 8, 2009-June 15, 2011.

Derek Jeter, Jacoby Ellsbury and Mark Teixeira collected two hits apiece in the win, with Ellsbury recording two stolen bases and two runs scored.

Melky Cabrera and Edwin Encarnacion each had a two-run homer for Toronto, which was swept in a series of three games or more for the first time since the Angels took three on Sept. 10-12.

Drew Hutchison (5-5) was knocked around in 4 1/3 innings, surrendering four runs on six hits and four walks with three strikeouts.

"We didn't play good baseball," Hutchison said. "That's what it is. It's over now. We just have to move on and continue forward."

Hutchison entered the contest with a 4-1 record and 1.79 ERA on the road. He also pitched seven or more scoreless innings in three of his last four starts away from home.

Brett Gardner doubled off the base of the wall in right to open the game. Jeter followed with a slow dribbler down the third-base line for an infield single that put runners at the corners, and Ellsbury lined out to left to score Gardner.

Brian McCann, who matched a career high of five RBI in Wednesday's win, walked to lead off the second and Ichiro Suzuki singled through the hole on the right side before Brian Roberts took a free pass to load the bases.

Kelly Johnson lifted a sacrifice fly to right to give New York a 2-0 lead.

Toronto knotted the game up in the top of the third when Cabrera followed Jose Reyes' two-out single with a homer to left.

Ellsbury poked a single into center to begin the home half of the third, stole second and raced home when Teixeira pulled a single into right.

With runners on first and second and two outs in the fifth, Beltran stroked a ground-rule double to right center that pushed the margin to 4-2.

Jeter then added an RBI groundout in the sixth and Yangervis Solarte walked with the bases loaded in the seventh to increase the cushion to 6-2.

Encarnacion cut the deficit in half in the eighth after he belted his 21st homer of the season to left.

Matt Thornton recorded the first out in the ninth before allowing a single to Colby Rasmus. Adam Warren entered and closed out the win with his second save of the season.

Game Notes

Johnson left the game in the sixth with bruised fingers on his left hand after getting hit attempting to bunt ... Ellsbury now has 20 stolen bases this season ... Toronto went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position, while New York connected on 3-of-14 at-bats with RISP.
