Recap: Milwaukee vs. Washington

Milwaukee, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Ryan Zimmerman stroked a game-winning homer in the 16th inning, leading the Washington Nationals to a 4-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers in the second installment of a three-game set.

Adam LaRoche got aboard with a one-out single off reliever Mike Fiers (0-1) in the top of the 16th, then Zimmerman brought him home with a towering shot to left-center field to put the Nationals in front.

"We were scratching and clawing," said Nationals manager Matt Williams. "We had some opportunities. That's a big swing for us right there."

Rafael Soriano retired the side in order during the home half of the 16th to earn his 18th save of the season.

Anthony Rendon also homered for the Nationals, who extended their winning streak to four games. Reliever Tyler Clippard (5-2) tossed a scoreless 15th inning to earn the win.

Nats starter Jordan Zimmermann conceded just two runs on six hits with nine strikeouts across six solid frames.

Ryan Braun supplied two hits and two RBI for Milwaukee, which has dropped the first two games of the series. Starter Yovani Gallardo gave up just one run on four hits in six innings of work.

"The two home runs were big hits for those guys," said Brewers manager Ron Roenicke. "We had plenty of chances. We had bad at-bats today. We've been swinging the bats well, but we had some bad at-bats."

Denard Span led off the first with a single to right, stole second, moved to third on Rendon's base hit and scored on Jayson Werth's ground out.

The Brewers disrupted Zimmermann's no-hit bid in the fourth. Braun and Jonathan Lucroy both singled and Carlos Gomez walked to load the bases with one out. Zimmermann recovered to get Aramis Ramirez to pop up and Khris Davis to strike out, ending the frame.

Milwaukee took a 2-1 lead in the fifth. Mark Reynolds and Jean Segura both singled and moved up a base on Gallardo's sacrifice bunt. After Scooter Gennett struck out, Braun drove in both runs on a base hit into left field.

Rendon tied the game in the eighth with a one-out blast to right-center field, eluding a leaping Gomez at the wall.

Lyle Overbay led off the 13th inning with a single off Ross Detwiler. Overbay moved to second on Gennett's sacrifice bunt and took third on Braun's ground out. Detwiler intentionally walked Lucroy, but Gomez lined out to end the threat.
