Recap: Toronto vs. NY Yankees

Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Mark Teixeira homered and drove in three runs to power the New York Yankees to a 5-3 victory over Toronto that denied the Blue Jays a series sweep.

Jacoby Ellsbury added three hits, including an RBI single, and Hiroki Kuroda tossed 6 1/3 effective innings to help the Yankees halt a four-game skid that included losses in each of the first two tests of this three-game set.

Kuroda (5-5) shook off a leadoff homer to Jose Reyes to hold the Blue Jays to three runs while scattering eight hits and earn his first win since May 28.

Reyes had a big night in defeat, finishing 3-for-5 with two runs scored, while Melky Cabrera ended 2-for-4 with a two-run single for AL East leader Toronto.

Drew Hutchison (5-6) was handed the loss after permitting four runs in six innings of work.

Hutchison had his fate sealed by a rough third inning that the right-hander began by walking Kelly Johnson on five pitches with Toronto holding a 1-0 lead. Francisco Cervelli followed with a well-executed hit-and-run double off the right-field wall that tied the game, and Ellsbury put New York ahead soon afterward by lacing a sharp single up the middle with two out.

Teixeira then stepped in and sent a hard line drive to right that was able to clear the wall to stake the Yankees to a 4-1 lead.

"It was great to see (Kuroda) settle down and pitch really well," said Teixeira. "He's been so good for us over the years. Giving him a good lead early on was nice."

Hutchison was solid over the remainder of his stint, working out of a bases- loaded jam in the fifth and striking out the side in order an inning later, right after the Blue Jays closed the gap by reaching Kuroda for two runs in their half of the fifth.

Reyes kept the inning alive by smacking a two-out, ground-rule double that moved Munenori Kawasaki to third, setting up Cabrera's opposite-field single that plated both runners and brought Toronto within one.

Rob Rasmussen couldn't keep it a 4-3 game upon relieving Hutchison, however, with the reliever issuing a pair of walks and hitting Derek Jeter with a pitch to load the bases with none out in the seventh. The Yankees were able to get an insurance run out of the situation when Teixeira lofted a sacrifice fly.

Toronto put forth a threat in the bottom of the inning, with Kawasaki and Reyes each coming through with singles and the Jays putting two in scoring position before New York reliever Matt Thornton retired Adam Lind for the third out.

The Blue Jays then brought the tying run to the plate with one down in the eighth, prompting Yankees manager Joe Girardi to summon David Robertson for a five-out save in which he recorded three strikeouts.

After serving up a long homer to Reyes on his first pitch of the night, Kuroda didn't allow a runner past second until the Blue Jays inched closer in the fifth.
