Recap: NY Mets vs. Oakland

Flushing, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Yoenis Cespedes hit a three-run double, Brandon Moss added a two-run homer and Brad Mills picked up his first win of the season as Oakland downed New York, 8-5, in Wednesday's conclusion of a two-game interleague set.

Coco Crisp finished 3-for-5 with a solo homer and two RBI for the Athletics, who earned a split in the series.

Mills (1-0) worked 6 1/3 innings, giving up nine hits and three runs while fanning four. Sean Doolittle struck out the side in the ninth to earn his 11th save.

"Several hits found holes, but that's fine because they're swinging the bat," said Mills. "That's the goal of a starting pitcher, get them swinging the bat. Let them hit it to your defense, and you look up and it's the sixth or seventh inning and you're winning the ball game."

Lucas Duda hit a late three-run shot and Chris Young added a two-run homer for the Mets, whose three-game win streak came to an end.

Zack Wheeler (3-8) recorded only six outs in the loss, having allowed six runs on as many hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

"I don't even know what to say. Just a bad outing," said Wheeler. "I really didn't give us a chance to win out of the chute."

New York finally came to life in the home seventh, when Travis d'Arnaud reached with a one-out infield hit and Ruben Tejada followed with a solid single ahead of Duda's pinch-hit three-run shot to right center. Dan Otero entered for Mills but plunked Eric Young ahead of an inning-ending double-play grounder from Daniel Murphy.

Curtis Granderson kept the eighth alive with a two-out double and Chris Young's blast to left pulled the Mets within 8-5.

Doolittle threw cold water on the Mets' comeback effort, striking out the side in the ninth.

Oakland's offensive onslaught against Wheeler began in the opening frame, as Cespedes reached on a fielder's choice grounder, then Moss deposited a ball into the upper deck in right for a 2-0 game.

Oakland picked up four more in the second thanks to a Crisp RBI single and a bases-clearing double down the left-field line from Cespedes.

Crisp reached the seats in left with one away in the fourth and the visitors assumed a 7-0 edge.

In the sixth, Josh Reddick and Alberto Callaspo greeted Gonzalez German with back-to-back singles which left runners on the corners, then Reddick scored when Mills hit into a 6-4-3 double play.
