Recap: Seattle vs. Cleveland

Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Chris Young tossed five effective innings to guide the Seattle Mariners to a 3-2 win against the Cleveland Indians in the opener of a three-game set on Friday.

Young (7-4), who has reached the seven-win mark for the first time since 2008, allowed just one run on four hits with four strikeouts to improve to 5-1 at Safeco Field this season.

Endy Chavez had a solo homer, Kyle Seager added three hits with an RBI and Brad Miller drove in a run for the Mariners, who have won nine of their last 12 contests.

Trevor Bauer (2-4), who remains winless in eight career road starts, surrendered three runs on nine hits while fanning four in 6 1/3 innings.

"As he got into the game, I thought he got much better. We just weren't able to score," Indians manager Terry Francona said.

Michael Bourn collected three hits with an RBI and Michael Brantley drove in a run for the Indians, who have lost five of six.

Seattle jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first. Chavez led off with a single and stole second with two outs. Seager then drove him home with a base hit into center field.

Brantley delivered a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to left that scored David Murphy in the third.

Saunders liner to left kept the fourth inning alive. After a Dustin Ackley walk, Miller dropped a ball in center to put the M's ahead 2-1.

Chavez led off the seventh with his first home run of the season to extend Seattle's lead to 3-1.

"I'm glad to hit a home run in that situation and put us in a better situation to win the game," Chavez said.

After a Carlos Santana two-out walk, Jason Kipnis' double in the eighth put two runners in scoring position. Charlie Furbush produced a Lonnie Chisenhall groundout to keep it a two-run game.

Nick Swisher singled off Fernando Rodney with one out in the ninth. Swisher advanced to second on a groundout and scored on Bourn's RBI base hit to right. Rodney nailed down his 22nd save of the season on an Asdrubal Cabrera pop out to end the game.

Game Notes

Chavez has recorded a hit in 10 of 16 games in his first plate appearance as a leadoff batter this season, including eight of his last 10 games ... Young is 7-1 in 11 outings lifetime at Safeco ... The Indians were 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position ... Bourn extended his hitting streak to six games ... Seattle is 16-9 in June ... Cleveland is 35-28 all-time at Safeco Field, good for second-best record of any AL team only behind the Yankees (excludes Houston) ... Cleveland is 15-26 on the road.

There was quite a bit of hitting on the field at Milan Puskar Stadium last weekend, but almost as much action took place in the streets just outside in the hours following West Virginia's upset of visiting Baylor.
