Recap: Cleveland vs. NY Yankees

Cleveland, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Nick Swisher blasted a go-ahead, two-run homer in the sixth inning and Michael Brantley contributed a solo shot with a pair of run-scoring doubles, as the Cleveland Indians knocked around Yankees rookie All-Star Masahiro Tanaka in a 5-3 victory over New York at Progressive Field.

Tanaka (12-4) suffered his third loss in his last four outings after the Tribe tagged him for season highs of five runs and 10 hits over 6 2/3 innings. He hadn't allowed more than three earned runs in any of his first 16 starts, but gave up four in a victory over Minnesota five days ago before eclipsing that by one on Tuesday.

Brantley, also an All-Star for the first time, notched his fifth straight multi-hit game and Jason Kipnis added a pair of hits with a run scored for the Indians, who bounced back from a 5-3 loss in Monday's opener of the four-game series and won for the fifth time in their last seven outings.

Trevor Bauer (3-4) settled down after a rough first two innings and halted a three-start winless streak. He was charged with three runs -- two earned -- on four hits with two walks and six strikeouts over seven solid innings.

"He got dialed in and really got comfortable out there, attacking the zone," said Indians manager Terry Francona about his starter.

Mark Teixeira and Brett Gardner each drove in a run for New York, which had won its last two and fell to 4-2 on an 11-game road trip.

The Yankees, after scoring three times in the first two innings, didn't have a hit against Bauer after the third. The lone baserunner over right-hander's final four innings came when Jacoby Ellsbury reached on an error by Swisher in the fifth.

Swisher atoned for that mistake in the sixth to erase a 3-2 deficit. Lonnie Chisenhall led off with a single and Tanaka had Swisher in an 0-2 count before the ex-Yankee drilled a 1-2 hanging slider over the wall in right-center field for his second home run in two nights against his former team.

Bauer finished his night with a 1-2-3 seventh, retiring the last two batters on called third strikes, and Brantley increased the Cleveland lead in the bottom of the inning with a two-out homer into the right-center field seats.

"I thought, as a group tonight, our lineup did a really good job of laying off balls that were out of the zone and trying to get something we could hit," said Francona about his team's approach to facing Tanaka.

Bryan Shaw set down Derek Jeter, Ellsbury and Teixeira without issue in the eighth and Cody Allen struck out two of the three hitters he faced in the ninth to nail down his 10th save.

The Yankees grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first. Gardner led off with a walk, took second on a one-out single by Ellsbury and scored on a flared single into left by Teixeira. The Yankees pulled off a double steal as Brian McCann struck out and Yan Gomes went for Teixeira at second, but the ball sailed into center field and allowed Ellsbury to score.

Cleveland responded with a run in the home half as Kipnis singled on the first pitch, stole second and scored on a double by Brantley. Tanaka escaped further trouble after a two-out walk to Chisenhall by getting Swisher on a grounder to first.

The Yankees added a run in the second. Ichiro Suzuki singled, moved to second on a walk and advanced to third on a bunt before scoring on a grounder to short by Gardner.

Cleveland stranded two in the home second and crept within one in the fifth when Chris Dickerson led off with a single, advanced two bases on a pair of groundouts and scored on a double to left by Brantley.

"He did get on a roll in innings three, four and five, but the mistakes kind of caught up to him," said Yankees manager Joe Girardi about Tanaka. "He just made a couple mistakes. It happens."
