Recap: Seattle vs. Minnesota

Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Phil Hughes struck out eight in 7 1/3 scoreless innings, guiding the Minnesota Twins to a 2-0 victory over the Seattle Mariners in the second installment of a four-game set from Safeco Field.

Sam Fuld, batting out of the No. 9 hole, went 3-for-3 with a solo home run for Minnesota, which had dropped 11 of its previous 14 games. Kendrys Morales had two hits and Brian Dozier, who will participate in next week's Home Run Derby, drove in a run.

Hughes (9-5) yielded eight hits and no walks, breaking a personal two-start losing streak.

Counterpart Chris Young (8-5) took the hard-luck loss after allowing both runs on six hits over seven-plus innings of work. Young, who was 3-0 over his last four starts, has allowed two or fewer runs in his last five outings.

"I tried to work ahead, elevate the fastball, keep my breaking balls down," Young said. "I needed to keep them scoreless tonight, or one at most, to give us a chance."

Michael Saunders and James Jones had two hits apiece in defeat.

Fuld opened the scoring in the top of the fifth, lifting a 3-2 offering over the wall in right, just out of the reach of a leaping Saunders.

Minnesota added an insurance run in the eighth on Dozier's sac fly to left. Eduardo Escobar led off with a walk and Fuld moved him to third with a single before Young was replaced on the mound by Yoervis Medina.

Fuld stole second to put a pair in scoring position with no outs for Dozier, who lined out to Dustin Ackley in left. The speedy Escobar sprinted home, beating Ackley's throw as it came in wide of home. Fuld moved to third on Eduardo Nunez's groundout, but Kurt Suzuki's grounder stranded him there.

Hughes pitched into the eighth but ran into trouble, serving up consecutive singles with one away before manager Ron Gardenhire went to his bullpen. The move paid off, as Casey Fien came on and got Robinson Cano to ground into an inning-ending double play.

"We held on," said Gardenhire. "We got enough runs. Casey Fien got the biggest out of the night."

All-Star closer Glen Perkins got some help from his defense during his 1-2-3 ninth. Nunez made a diving catch in foul territory on a Kyle Seager pop up to start the frame, and Escobar made a backhand stab on Willie Bloomquist's sharp grounder and fired to first to end the game and give Perkins his 21st save.
