Recap: LA Angels vs. Seattle

Anaheim, CA ( - Logan Morrison hit a go-ahead RBI double in the top of the 12th inning and the Seattle Mariners topped the LA Angels of Anaheim, 3-2, in the middle test of a three-game set.

Kyle Seager began the 12th with a double into the gap in left-center against Joe Thatcher (0-1) and Morrison followed by flaring a two-bagger down the left-field line to bring home Seager. Mike Morin replaced Thatcher on the mound.

Endy Chavez then hit a bunt single that stayed fair down the third-base line and put runners on the corners. Chavez stole second on a Dustin Ackley strikeout and Brad Miller was intentionally walked to load the bases with one away. Pinch-hitter Justin Smoak then cued an infield single to plate pinch-runner Willie Bloomquist and re-load the bases, but Seattle couldn't add to its 3-1 lead. James Jones popped out and Stefen Romero grounded out to end the threat.

David Freese smacked a leadoff homer over the wall in left-center in the home 12th against Dominic Leone (3-2), but Charlie Furbush came on to record the final three outs in succession to notch his first save of the season.

"We battled and found a way to win tonight," Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said.

Seattle exacted revenge following the Angels' 3-2 16-inning win on Friday night.

Prior to the extra frames, Felix Hernandez and Garrett Richards were locked in a pitchers' duel.

Hernandez struck out nine and allowed an unearned run on two hits and four walks over seven innings, while Richards fanned seven and surrendered a run on three hits and a walk over eight frames.

Seager and Ackley both went 2-for-5 with a run scored for Seattle.

Kendrick had two of the Angels' five hits.

"We just couldn't get the one hit to turn the game in our favor," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said.

The Mariners opened the scoring in the sixth before the Angels got the run back in the seventh.

Ackley led off the sixth with a double into the gap in left-center and advanced to third on a Miller groundout. Jesus Sucre then banged a base hit to left and plate Ackley.

A pair of walks to begin the sixth by Albert Pujols and Josh Hamilton put runners on first and second with none away. Howie Kendrick then chopped one back up the middle, which appeared to be a potential double-play ball, but miscommunication between Miller and Robinson Cano ensued instead.

There was indecisiveness between the fielders as to whom would field the grounder and Miller snagged the bouncer late before bouncing his throw to first, which got away from Morrison and allowed Pujols to scamper home from third and tie the game at 1-1.

Hernandez bore down, however, inducing a grounder to third off the bat of Efren Navarro and Seager threw home and got Hamilton caught in a rundown. Chris Iannetta then struck out to end the inning.

Game Notes

The Angels were 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position, while the Mariners finished 4-for-9 ... Huston Street made his Angels debut in the ninth inning after being acquired from the San Diego Padres on Friday night.

Smith replaces Larson for Martinsville race

Extra Points: Snyder and the Beltway radio wars

If contradiction was an Olympic sport, Chip Kelly would certainly be medal-worthy judging by his performance at the NFL's owners meeting but the Eagles coach might have to settle for silver because Daniel Snyder's critics will take the gold every time.

2015 PREVIEW NL EAST: It's the Nationals and everybody else

There isn't much after that. The Miami Marlins are loaded up for a playoff push -- likely through a wild card spot -- and the New York Mets are up-and- coming but still raw. The Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies, former powerhouses of the division, are going through rebuilds and won't contend anytime soon.
