Recap: Toronto vs. Boston

Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - David Ortiz belted a pair of two-run homers, Stephen Drew homered and drove in four runs and the Boston Red Sox pummeled the Toronto Blue Jays, 14-1, in the opener of a four-game series.

Mike Napoli went 3-for-5 with a solo homer and three runs scored, while Jackie Bradley Jr. and Christian Vazquez each had two RBI for the surging Red Sox, winners of five straight and eight of their last nine.

"We had a good offensive approach up and down the lineup," Red Sox manager John Farrell said. "It was a well played game in all phases."

Boston's season-high output overshadowed a terrific outing from John Lackey (11-6), who did his part with seven innings of one-run, two hit ball.

The Blue Jays, fresh off a series win against the Texas Rangers, only produced one run via consecutive doubles from Erik Kratz and Juan Francisco in the third inning.

Their starter, Drew Hutchison (6-9), did not make it out of the top half of the third en route to his fifth loss in his last six starts.

"It was a bad night," Hutchison said. "I didn't give us a chance to win."

The young right-hander gave up three straight hits to open the second, the last an RBI single from Drew, and failed to field Vazquez's chopper back to the mound with two outs, which allowed Daniel Nava to score.

In the third, Drew followed a pair of two-out singles from Napoli and Nava with a home run, and Hutchison was pulled after Xander Bogaerts reached on a base hit and raced around to score on a Bradley double.

Hutchison was charged with six runs on nine hits, and his replacement, Brad Mills, fared even worse, surrendering eight runs over just two innings.

Ortiz smashed a two-run blast to straightaway center in the fourth, then added another during a six-run fifth frame. The Red Sox already had run-scoring hits from Bradley and Brock Holt by that point, as well as an RBI groundout from Vazquez, and Ortiz and Napoli hit back-to-back homers to end Mills' miserable performance.

Game Notes

Toronto was outhit, 18-3 ... Boston's previous season-high run total of 11 came against the Astros on July 13 ... Ortiz, who passed Red Sox great Carl Yastrzemski for 36th place on the all-time home run list with 453, recorded his 44th career multi-home run game.
