Recap: Baltimore vs. LA Angels

Baltimore, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Manny Machado homered into a sea of orange-clad fans in the 12th inning to send the Baltimore Orioles past the Angels, 7-6, in the opener of a three-game series between playoff contenders.

The AL-East leading Orioles improved to 12-3 in extra innings, including 6-0 in July, when Machado smacked a leadoff shot off Cory Rasmus (2-1) into the left-field seats for his first career walk-off home run.

"Once I hit it I knew it was out," Machado said. "I had chills running around the bases."

Nick Markakis hit a three-run homer for Baltimore, which was coming off a successful 6-4 road trip.

Josh Hamilton homered and drove in three runs during a three-hit night for the Angels, who had won four of five entering the set.

Each bullpen was called on early after neither starter made it out of the fifth inning. Chris Tillman was tagged for five runs -- three earned -- on six hits for Baltimore, while Jered Weaver surrendered a season-high six earned runs on seven hits and four walks.

Hamilton got the scoring started in the first with an RBI groundout, and Adam Jones countered in the bottom half with a solo blast -- his 20th of the year.

J.J. Hardy singled in Nelson Cruz later in the frame, and the Angels answered with a pair of runs in their next turn.

With a runner on third and one out, David Freese bounced a comebacker off Tillman's hip. Tillman recovered quickly, but his throw home went to backstop. Howie Kendrick scored on the error, and Freese came around on Kole Calhoun's two-out double.

Machado evened things at 3-3 with an RBI double in the home half, and Hank Conger's sacrifice fly in the fourth preceeded Weaver walking a pair in front of Markakis, who turned on one and lined it off the right-field foul pole to give the Orioles a 6-4 lead.

Hamilton took Tillman deep for a solo homer in the fifth, then stepped up in the seventh with two outs and runners on the corners. Brian Matusz appeared to induce an inning-ending groundout to short, but Hardy hesitated a moment and Hamilton beat the throw to first, allowing Mike Trout to score.

The Angels, who went 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position, put men on second and third in the 12th, but Ryan Webb (3-1) got Erick Aybar on a lineout to first to end the threat.

"We had some opportunities and couldn't get it done," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said.
