Recap: Boston vs. NY Yankees

Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Dustin Pedroia drove in two runs and scored a run to help Anthony Ranaudo earn the win in his MLB debut, as the Boston Red Sox held off the New York Yankees, 4-3, on Friday.

With John Lackey and Jon Lester gone, the Red Sox recalled Ranaudo from Triple-A Pawtucket. Ranaudo (1-0) gave up two runs on four hits with four walks over six innings.

The Red Sox made four deals prior to Thursday's non-waiver trade deadline. They acquired slugger Yoenis Cespedes and a 2015 competitive balance draft pick from the Athletics for Lester, outfielder Jonny Gomes and cash considerations.

That was just one of the moves Boston general manager Ben Cherington made, as he shipped Lackey, minor league pitcher Corey Littrell and cash considerations to St. Louis for outfielder Allen Craig and righty Joe Kelly. He also sent left-handed reliever Andrew Miller to Baltimore for a minor leaguer and traded shortstop Stephen Drew to the Yankees for infielder Kelly Johnson.

The Johnson/Drew trade was the first between the Red Sox and Yankees since 1997.

"We spoke before the game about 54 games remaining and it's important for us to take every opportunity to go out and execute as consistent and successful as possible, and tonight was a step in that way," Red Sox manager John Farrell said.

The Yankees also got infielder Martin Prado from the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday.

Former Red Sox hurler Chris Capuano (1-2) got the start for New York on Friday and gave up four runs on eight hits with five strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings. He was designated for assignment by Boston on June 25 after going 1-1 with a 4.55 ERA in 28 relief appearances.

Boston scored a pair of runs in the third. Brock Holt tripled to right and crossed the plate on Pedroia's ground-rule double to center. David Ortiz followed with an RBI single to right. Craig's first hit in a Red Sox uniform was a double to left, which put men on second and third, but Xander Bogaerts grounded out.

Carlos Beltran led off the fourth with a homer to right. The Red Sox, however, got the run back in the bottom half when Will Middlebrooks doubled and raced home on a David Ross single.

"After that, I felt like I found my release point and started to make better pitches," Capuano said. "I want to take what I did the last three innings and start out from the get-go next time."

The Yankees scored a run in the sixth thanks to a successful challenge. Jacoby Ellsbury, who led off with a walk, collected a stolen base after a challenge reversed the original ruling of an out. Ellsbury advanced to third on Mark Teixeira's groundout and raced home on Beltran's single to center.

The Red Sox got the run back in the seventh. Mookie Betts led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Shawn Kelley came in from the bullpen and gave up an RBI single to Pedroia.

New York pulled within one again in the eighth. Derek Jeter smacked Junichi Tazawa's offering over the Green Monster. The Yankees went on to strand runners on the corners.

Koji Uehara tossed a scoreless ninth to pick up his 22nd save of the season.
