Recap: Arizona vs. Pittsburgh

Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Tuffy Gosewisch scored the game-winning run during the 10th inning to lift the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 3-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates in a bizarre finish of a four-game set on Sunday.

Gosewisch hit a liner into left-center field for a double off Mark Melancon (1-3) with one out. Nick Ahmed walked and Gosewisch moved to third on a wild pitch.

Andy Marte then stepped into the batter's box and grounded to shortstop Jordy Mercer, who flipped the ball to Jayson Nix at second base for an out. Nix tried to turn the double play, but his throw to first hit a sliding Ahmed and deflected towards the mound, allowing Gosewisch to give Arizona a 3-2 win.

"I went in hard and slid late. Looked like Nix kind of dropped down to try to make the throw and just hit me in the arm," Ahmed said.

Several Pirates players argued the call and Hurdle soon joined them, but the umpires left the field and the controversial series came to a close.

"I felt that there was an extra effort in him getting his hands up in the way," said Pirates manager Clint Hurdle on the deciding play.

Diamondbacks star first baseman Paul Goldschmidt suffered a fractured left hand after getting hit with an Ernesto Frieri fastball in the ninth inning of Friday's game, which resulted in him landing on the disabled list. Arizona retaliated in Saturday's contest when Randall Delgado was tossed for intentionally hitting Andrew McCutchen in the back with a fastball.

Ender Inciarte finished with two hits and an RBI and Jordan Pacheco supplied an RBI single for the Diamondbacks, who snapped a two-game skid.

Evan Marshall (4-2) earned the win by striking out two in a scoreless 10th inning. Starter Trevor Cahill surrendered just one run on seven hits and a walk with seven strikeouts over seven innings.

McCutchen and Michael Martinez each drove in a run for Pittsburgh, which had starter Francisco Liriano pitch six innings, where he allowed two runs on four hits with six strikeouts.

Russell Martin singled to lead off the second for Pittsburgh, moved to third on Ike Davis' double to left and scored two batters later on Martinez's groundout.

Arizona went ahead in the bottom of the third. Gosewisch singled to open the frame, Ahmed walked and Cahill's sacrifice bunt moved the runners up a base. Inciarte's groundout to second plated Gosewisch and Pacheco's liner into center field scored Ahmed for a 2-1 score.

Mark Trumbo opened the home fourth with a sharp liner off the wall in right- center field for a double. Liriano struck out David Peralta and got Alfredo Marte to hit into an inning-ending double play.

The Pirates tied the game at 2-2 in the eighth. Josh Harrison singled and Gregory Polanco doubled to left to put runners at second and third to start the frame. McCutchen's sac fly to deep left plated Harrison. Martin grounded out at first and on the play Polanco rushed home, but was tagged out to end the frame.

McCutchen left the game after the at-bat with left side discomfort.

The Diamondbacks threatened in the home half. Gosewisch walked and moved to second on Ahmed's sac bunt. Two batters later, Inciarte singled to place runners at the corners.

Harrison got aboard with a one-out single in the 10th and moved to second on Marshall's botched pickoff attempt. Marshall then intentionally walked Polanco in hopes of a double play. Both runners moved up a base on a passed ball to place runners at second and third, but Gabby Sanchez and Travis Snider both struck out to end the frame.
