Recap: Philadelphia vs. Houston

Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Chase Utley hit a three-run homer and scored twice as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Houston Astros, 10-3, to take the first two of a three-game set.

Ryan Howard hit two doubles, batted in two and scored a run as the Phillies won back-to-back series at home for the first time since September of 2013. Marlon Byrd and Wil Nieves each added one RBI, while Ben Revere finished 4- for-5 with a run scored and a triple.

David Buchanan (6-5) picked up the win with five strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings of work. He scattered nine hits and let in three runs while also getting his first career hit, an RBI single during a five-run first inning for the Phillies.

"We had some good early offense with five runs in the first inning," said Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg. "Then Buchanan went out and threw a lot of strikes with the lead. He was able to scatter some hits and he did a good job with some men on base."

Jose Altuve knocked in a run, singled twice and grabbed a stolen base for the Astros, who were looking for revenge after having their three-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday with Philadelphia's 2-1 win in 15 innings.

Brad Peacock (3-8) was lit up for eight runs on seven hits and four walks in just five innings.

The Astros wasted no time getting on the board. Altuve opened the game with a double on a line drive into left field, then stole second. After Chris Carter put runners on the corners with a single, Jon Singleton plated Altuve by grounding into a fielder's choice.

The Phillies responded in a big way in their half of the first, however.

Revere hit a leadoff single that was followed by a double by Jimmy Rollins, and Howard sent both runners home with a double to left-center field. Byrd and Grady Sizemore then both walked, loading the bases before Peacock threw a wild pitch, allowing Howard to score. Nieves then sent Byrd home with a sacrifice fly to left for a 4-0 lead.

"You look at that first inning, I think it's one of things where he missed a few spots," Astros manager Bo Porter said of Peacock. "Those guys did a good job putting good swings on it."

After the Astros intentionally walked Cody Asche, Buchanan stepped to the plate and delivered his first major league hit, an RBI single to right field, but was thrown out trying to stretch his single into a double to end the inning.

After both pitchers settled down for the next two innings, the Astros got one back in the fourth. Matt Dominguez doubled and moved to third on a Carlos Corporan groundout, and Jake Marisnick hit a fly ball to center deep enough to score Dominguez.

Philadelphia countered again a half-inning later. Buchanan walked and Rollins singled on a line drive to right before Utley hit one into the seats in right field to put the Phillies up 8-2.

Buchanan gave up back-to-back singles to Gregorio Petit and pinch-hitter Marc Krauss to open the seventh. Byrd had trouble fielding the line drive hit by Krauss, allowing the runners to advance to second and third. Altuve grounded out, but Petit managed to score on the play.

Jake Diekman took over pitching duties for Philadelphia and recorded the last two outs of the inning.

Three consecutive singles by Utley, Howard and Byrd to start the home half of the seventh gave the Phillies another run, with Byrd receiving the RBI.

Revere tripled in the eighth and scored on a wild pitch by Michael Foltynewicz for the game's final run.

Heisman Rankings: Week 4

It's difficult to tell which was the bigger story line in Week 4, the meteoric rise of a preseason underdog or the reigning winner making headlines for all the wrong reasons. With the regular season just about one-third of the way done, let's see how the newest iteration of the Heisman Rankings shake out.
