Recap: Detroit vs. Seattle

Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - The second wild-card spot in the American League now belongs to Seattle.

Robinson Cano belted a solo home run to back a solid James Paxton before exiting with an apparent foot injury late in the game, and the Mariners took the opener of a key series against the Detroit Tigers, 7-2.

The Mariners, who arrived at Comerica Park after an 8-1 homestand, matched their season high with their fifth consecutive win and moved a half-game ahead of the Tigers in the wild card race.

Paxton (3-0) remained undefeated in nine career major league starts after holding Detroit to a run on five hits and one walk over six innings.

"That's a fantastic lineup they have there," Paxton said of the Tigers. "I had some things go my way, that's for sure. It was really a fight tonight."

Miguel Cabrera doubled twice and scored one run for the Tigers, who have dropped five of seven and trail AL Central-leading Kansas City by 1 1/2 games.

Detroit starter Rick Porcello (13-8) gave up six runs -- five earned -- on 10 hits in six frames.

"We'd much rather be in first place up by 15 games but that's not the case so we're just going to keep going," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. "There's a ton of baseball left."

Seattle's first five batters reached against Porcello in a three-run second. Logan Morrison and Endy Chavez both hit RBI singles before a bunt single by Chris Taylor loaded the bases. Morrison scored on a double-play ball off the bat of former Tiger Austin Jackson.

The Mariners acquired Jackson in the David Price deal at the non-waiver trade deadline.

Cano made it 4-0 when he opened the third by jumping on Porcello's first pitch and driving it over the right-field wall.

The Mariners added runs in the fourth and fifth innings to extend their lead to 6-1. Taylor singled home Morrison, who led off the fourth with a double, and Cano came around on a Kyle Seager base hit in the fifth.

Detroit scored its lone run off Paxton in the third. Rajai Davis hit a one-out triple to the right-field corner before Ian Kinsler plated him with a grounder to short.

The inning ended with a fine defensive play by the shortstop Taylor, who made a diving stop on the outfield grass and threw out Victor Martinez after a Cabrera double.

Martinez had an RBI single in the eighth.

2014-15 San Jose Sharks Preview

In another move that bucks tradition, the Sharks completely revamped their on- ice leadership structure not by selecting new players to wear the precious singular letters on their uniforms, but by stripping the captaincy from Joe Thornton, removing the alternate tag from Patrick Marleau and leaving the other "A" vacant after Dan Boyle signed as a free agent with the Rangers.
