Recap: Boston vs. Houston

Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - The first career grand slam for Jose Altuve was one of three homers crushed by the Houston Astros as they beat the Boston Red Sox 8-1 to earn a split of a four-game set at Fenway Park.

"The big guy put a charge into that one," Astros manager Bo Porter said. "He got the bases loaded today and he put a really good swing on it."

The blast by Altuve punctuated a six-run second and came after what would have been an inning-ending double play was overturned by replay.

It appeared the frame was over when Boston shortstop Xander Bogaerts fielded a chopper up the middle, stepped on second base and threw to first.

The Astros, who were ahead 2-0 at that point, challenged the play and the ball was clearly out of Bogaerts' hand before he touched second.

Robbie Grossman then walked and Altuve followed with a drive to the seats atop the Green Monster in left field.

Boston manager John Farrell, already not happy that Houston was allowed to challenge the play, came out to argue once more and was ejected by first base umpire Doug Eddings.

Altuve finished with four hits, while Dexter Fowler and Jon Singleton both hit solo homers for the Astros.

Houston righty Collin McHugh (6-9) worked out of several jams while tossing six innings.

Boston had its chances, but finished 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position against McHugh, who gave up just one run for a fourth straight start. He allowed seven hits and walked four with six strikeouts.

It was a rough Fenway debut for Joe Kelly (0-1). He surrendered seven runs on seven hits and walked a career-high six batters in four innings.

"Today was one of those days where I wasn't able to command my fastball and they made me pay for it," Kelly said.

The Astros loaded the bases with no outs in the second on two singles and a walk. Marc Krauss was credited with an RBI single when left fielder Yoenis Cespedes couldn't track down a fly ball at the wall. Matt Dominguez added a sacrifice fly.

Fowler led off the third with a drive to right and Singleton homered with two gone in the ninth.

Daniel Nava doubled in Boston's lone run in the third.

Game Notes

Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia, who turned 31 on Sunday, missed the game with flu-like symptoms. Brock Holt played second in Pedroia's absence and extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a leadoff single in the first inning.
