Recap: Tampa Bay vs. Detroit

St. Petersburg, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Alex Cobb and two relievers combined on a four-hit shutout, while Brandon Guyer knocked in the lone run with his club's only hit as Tampa Bay edged Detroit by a 1-0 count in the finale of a three-game set.

"This one really lived up to the billing," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "It just happened we won. In order to beat a good pitcher, you have to outpitch him. In a very small and perverse way, we did."

Cobb (9-6) worked the first seven innings, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out six. The 26-year-old right-hander has won his last seven decisions and hasn't lost since June 23 against the Pirates.

Brad Boxberger tossed a scoreless eighth and Jake McGee worked around a one- out single from Miguel Cabrera in the ninth to notch his 14th save for the Rays, who avoided a sweep and ended a four-game losing skid.

Facing his former team for the first time, David Price (12-9) went the distance and was a hard-luck loser after fanning nine and allowing an unearned run for the Tigers, who had won three of four.

The Rays picked up a run in the first, providing all the help Cobb required, as Ben Zobrist reached on a Eugenio Suarez error and scored when Guyer followed with a triple.

"When I get to two strikes, I try to just spread out and watch the ball travel. And, if I get beat in, I get beat in," Guyer stated. "I just wanted to let the ball get there. If I don't have that approach, I probably roll over on that cutter, but I let it get deep and took it the other way."

Price retired the next 23 batters in order to keep the hosts from expanding their edge, but the Tiger bats were silent. The visitors went down in order in the first, second, fourth, fifth and sixth.

Detroit put two in scoring position with one out in the seventh. Torii Hunter hit a leadoff double, Victor Martinez was intentionally walked and both moved up on a wild pitch. Cobb completed his outing when J.D. Martinez struck out and Nick Castellanos flied out.

Suarez doubled with one out in the eighth, but Rajai Davis flied out and Ian Kinsler fanned swinging. McGee got Victor Martinez on a fly to left and J.D. Martinez on a pop to second to end the game.

"I just wish we would have scored some runs. At least one run," Hunter lamented of wasting Price's start. "It's really frustrating, you know? Of course it was a good game both ways, but -- at least one run? Can't we get one?"

Game Notes

Thursday's victory marked the first time in franchise history the Rays won a game with just one hit ... Price was sent to Detroit in a trade-deadline, three-team deal ... With his seven-strikeout performance, Price set a new single-season high of 219 strikeouts ... Price also became the first pitcher to toss a complete-game one-hitter or better while allowing no earned runs since Yankees starter Andy Hawkins no-hit the White Sox in a 4-0 loss on July 1, 1990.
