Recap: NY Yankees vs. Chicago WSox

Bronx, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - The New York Yankees retired the uniform number of former manager Joe Torre, then went on to beat the Chicago White Sox, 5-3, on Saturday.

The Yankees held a special pregame ceremony to honor Torre, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame this summer. Including Torre's No. 6, the Yankees have 17 retired uniform numbers for 18 players and managers. New York also honored Torre with a plaque in Monument Park at Yankee Stadium.

Torre spent 12 seasons as Yankees manager from 1996-2007, guiding the team to six World Series appearances and four World Series titles (1996, '98-2000). He compiled a regular season record of 1,173-767-2, leading the club to the playoffs in each year at the helm.

His win total trails only Joe McCarthy's team record 1,460 over 16 seasons from 1931-46.

"When you know the neighborhood you're in out there, it's pretty cool," Torre said. "It's unbelievable. It's the Yankees. You start talking about number retirement. This is the New York Yankees."

Martin Prado went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored for the Yankees, who entered the day eight games behind the Orioles for first place in the AL East. Carlos Beltran hit a solo homer and scored twice.

New York starter Hiroki Kuroda (9-8) allowed two runs on five hits with six strikeouts over six innings.

"He's a guy that we've tried to make sure we gave him the extra days when we could," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said of Kuroda. "We need him down the stretch. He's got the most experience out there and he's been pitching well."

Jose Abreu, Carlos Sanchez and Alexei Ramirez each drove in a run for the White Sox, who have lost five in a row. Scott Carroll (5-8) gave up five runs -- four earned -- on seven hits with three walks over six innings.

"That's what is frustrating is that the line isn't indicative of how well I threw the ball," said Carroll.

Each team scored once in the second. Conor Gillaspie and Ramirez started the top half with back-to-back doubles, making it 1-0 White Sox.

The Yankees loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom half, but Chase Headley grounded into a double play, scoring Mark Teixeira. Stephen Drew grounded out to end the inning.

The Yankees took the lead in the fourth thanks to Prado's two-run double to left. Prior to the hit, Teixeira was tagged out between second and third when he advanced too far around the base on Beltran's single.

Abreu's RBI single in the fifth got the White Sox within 3-2.

Beltran, who had missed the previous three games with a sore right elbow, led off the sixth with a blast to right. Prado followed with a double, moved to third on Headley's groundout and scored on Drew's sacrifice fly.

Sanchez's RBI groundout in the seventh accounted for the final margin.

Adam Warren tossed a perfect eighth and David Robertson pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up his 34th save.
