Recap: Colorado vs. San Diego

Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Tyler Matzek tossed the first shutout of his career in the Colorado Rockies' 3-0 win over the San Diego Padres in the opener of a three-game set.

Matzek (5-9) struck out six, scattered three hits and walked one for the Rockies, who have won three of their last four games. Drew Stubbs and Nolan Arenado smacked solo homers in the triumph.

"We're seeing the kid getting better and better," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said of Matzek. "His last three (starts) have been very good."

Eric Stults (6-16) surrendered three runs on eight hits and a walk over 6 1/3 frames for San Diego, which has dropped three in a row.

I thought Eric battled. Again he was a victim of a night where we didn't score," Padres manager Bud Black said.

The Rockies plated runs in the first, fifth and sixth innings.

Stubbs clubbed his solo shot into the Colorado bullpen in right-center with one out in the opening frame.

In the fifth, D.J. LeMahieu led off with a single, advanced to second on Matzek's sacrifice bunt and scored on Charlie Blackmon's base hit into right- center.

Arenado began the sixth with his solo blast into the seats in left to give the Rockies a 3-0 advantage.

The Padres didn't put a runner into scoring position until the ninth when they squandered a leadoff double by Abraham Almonte.

Game Notes

Matzek fired 75 of his 103 pitches for strikes ... The Rockies were 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position ... Friday was the start of a nine-game road trip for San Diego.
