Recap: Milwaukee vs. St. Louis

Milwaukee, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Adam Wainwright tossed his fourth complete game of the season to lead the St. Louis Cardinals in a 9-1 win over the Milwaukee Brewers to cap a four-game series.

Wainwright (17-9) gave up just seven hits and a run while striking out three in his 20th career complete game.

"Obviously a big win for our team, but it was a realization of all the little steps I've been taking over the past couple of weeks," said Wainwright. "I knew it was just going to be a matter of time."

Jhonny Peralta hit a two-run home run, Matt Carpenter and Peter Bourjos drove in two runs each while Oscar Taveras went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for the Cardinals, who have won eight of their last nine games.

Carlos Gomez drove in the only run of the game for the Brewers, who have dropped 11 of their last 12 games. Jimmy Nelson (2-7) allowed four runs on five hits in five innings.

"It's very frustrating for all of us," said Nelson. "All of us, though, still have a lot of confidence and we'll get things back together."

The game was scoreless until the fourth when St. Louis went on top. Jon Jay singled and moved to second on a bad pickoff throw from Nelson. Peralta then singled to put runners on the corners and Matt Adams scored the first run with a sacrifice fly. After Yadier Molina walked, Taveras singled to score another run and Bourjos followed with a two-run triple for a 4-0 lead.

In the seventh, Bourjos and Kolten Wong singled to leave runners at the corners, and Bourjos scored when Wong stole second and Martin Maldonado's throw went into the outfield. Carpenter singled later in the inning for a 6-0 advantage.

Wainwright, meanwhile, allowed just one runner to third, Ryan Braun in the fourth inning and he was stranded there after Gerardo Parra lined out to end the frame.

Double plays in the fifth and seventh innings helped out Wainwright's cause, and he tossed a 1-2-3 eighth inning.

Carpenter singled in another run in the ninth and Peralta gave his two-run home run later in the inning.

Gomez singled in Milwaukee's only run of the game in the ninth to break up the shutout.

Game Notes

Wainwright improved to 11-7 in 29 games against the Brewers ... Milwaukee hosts Miami for four games starting on Monday ... St. Louis stays on the road for a four-game series in Cincinnati beginning on Monday ... St. Louis has won 10 of the 16 games with Milwaukee this season.
