Recap: Minnesota vs. Cleveland

Minneapolis, MN ( - Trevor Plouffe's RBI single in the 10th inning gave the Minnesota Twins a 5-4 win over the Cleveland Indians in the opener of a three-game set.

With Kyle Crockett (4-1) on the mound, Danny Santana led off with a single, Brian Dozier then singled and Joe Mauer was issued an intentional walk. Kennys Vargas then struck out and Josh Tomlin took the mound. Plouffe greeted him with a liner that dropped in center for the win.

"We're happy to win these games but we're not where we want to be," said Plouffe. "We're still working towards that goal and it will have to be next year, but we're happy with the win."

Oswaldo Arcia went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI, while Vargas also hit a solo home run for the Twins, who have won four of their last five.

Phil Hughes went seven innings and allowed four runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts, while Jared Burton (3-5) got the final two outs of the 10th for the win.

Michael Brantley hit a solo home run for the Indians, who had a three-game winning streak snapped. Trevor Bauer gave up three runs on four hits over six innings in the start.

"We had a lead and ended up losing," said Bauer. "We dug ourselves a hole early on and now have to dig ourselves out, so losses like this really sting."

Arcia's leadoff home run in the third got Minnesota on the board, but Cleveland went on top in the fourth on consecutive RBI singles from Lonnie Chisenhall and Mike Aviles for a 2-1 lead.

Vargas' ninth home run of the year, a two-out solo shot in the fourth, tied the game for the Twins.

Brantley led off the sixth with his 20th home run of the season, and Michael Bourn hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh to make it a 4-2 game in the Indians' favor.

Arcia's RBI single in the seventh made it a one-run game and left runners at the corners with two outs. Zach McAllister, though, got Aaron Hicks to pop out and end the frame.

Minnesota had runners on first and second with two outs in the eighth, but Nick Hagadone struck out Vargas to end the threat.

Cody Allen, though, was unable to close out the game in the ninth. With one out, Kurt Suzuki doubled and Arcia followed with a single. Aaron Hicks then hit into a fielder's choice that scored Eduardo Nunez, who was pinch-running for Suzuki, to tie the game.
