Recap: Miami vs. Philadelphia

Miami, FL ( - Henderson Alvarez outdueled Cole Hamels to guide the Miami Marlins to a 2-0 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday.

Alvarez (12-6) pitched 7 2/3 scoreless innings, yielding just five hits and a walk to help Miami snap a four-game slide. The young right-hander has only lost once since July 19.

"We've seen him when he gets in a rhythm, he gets quick outs," said Marlins manager Mike Redmond. "He was able to do that, which allowed him to stay in the game. He did exactly what we needed him to and we got him his two runs."

Hamels is no stranger to the lack of run support his offense gave him in this one. Philadelphia's ace has been given two or fewer runs of support in 13 of his last 22 outings. He fell to 8-5 during that stretch despite a sub-2.00 ERA.

Hamels (9-8) was charged with both runs on seven hits in seven innings for Philadelphia, which fell to 2-6 on its 10-game road trip.

"Starters really aren't looked at to go nine (innings), so it's most likely (you're trying to) complete seven and hope to get into the eighth or ninth," said Hamels. "Any time you're able go seven and give up as few runs (as possible), that's looked at as doing your job."

With one out in the fourth inning, Miami got to Hamels with three straight singles. Jeff Baker started the rally, Jarrod Saltalamacchia followed with a base knock to left and Ed Lucas made it 1-0 with a single up the middle. With the bases loaded and two outs later in the frame, Alvarez popped up.

Christian Yelich doubled to lead off the fifth inning, moved to third on Donovan Solano's sacrifice and scored when Casey McGehee flew out to right.

The Phillies threatened in the top of the ninth against Steve Cishek. Marlon Byrd and Domonic Brown led off with singles to put the tying run on base. Cody Asche flied out to left for the first out. Grady Sizemore grounded into a fielder's choice that left runners on the corners for Darin Ruf, who struck out swinging to end the game.

Cishek picked up his 38th save.

The Phillies have been shutout 15 times this season, matching last year's total.
