Recap: Texas vs. Oakland

Arlington, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Sonny Gray tossed a shutout to help the Oakland Athletics clinch the American League's final wild card spot with a 4-0 victory over the Texas Rangers on Sunday.

Gray (14-10) allowed just six hits with five strikeouts to earn the win and snap a string of three straight losing decisions.

"I came into the game ready to go," said Gray. "Nothing else really mattered today other except for us winning. I did my best to make sure that happened."

Jed Lowrie hit a two-run single and Josh Reddick finished with two hits, an RBI and a run scored for Oakland (88-74), which will travel to Kansas City for a one-game playoff on Tuesday.

Elvis Andrus had two hits for the Rangers (67-95), who lost two of its final three games.

"It was a good run," Rangers interim manager Tim Bogar said. "We were pretty competitive and that's all I could ask out of my club."

Nick Martinez (5-12) was tagged with the loss after giving up two runs on four hits over 5 2/3 innings in defeat.

Brandon Moss doubled to lead off the second for Oakland. Reddick brought him in with a triple and came home two batters later on Stephen Vogt's fly ball to shallow center field for a 2-0 Oakland lead

The Rangers threatened in the fifth. Tomas Telis laced a leadoff double to left and Ryan Rua followed with a single, but the runners were left stranded after Luis Sardinas struck out and Adam Rosales grounded into a double play.

The A's loaded the bases with one out in the ninth before Lowrie grounded a two-run single into center field to account for the final score.
