Recap: Minnesota vs. Detroit

Minneapolis, MN (SportsNetwork.com) - Eugenio Suarez and Nick Castellanos each knocked in two runs as the Detroit Tigers defeated the Minnesota Twins, 8-6, in the second game of a day-night doubleheader.

Justin Verlander (11-11) returned to the hill after an 11-day absence and was charged with four runs on eight hits with six strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings to earn the win. Verlander, who has never been placed on the disabled list, left his start on August 11 against Pittsburgh with shoulder discomfort after giving up five runs in the first inning.

Torii Hunter and Victor Martinez each had three hits for the Tigers, who snapped a three-game losing streak and finally took a game from the Twins in this four-game set.

Minnesota outscored Detroit 32-10 in the opening two games, including a 12-4 win in Game 1 on Saturday.

Trevor May (0-3) is still in search of his first big league win after he was knocked around for five runs on 11 hits over 5 1/3 innings.

"It's about making pitches and getting guys out. I didn't do that very well," said May.

Trevor Plouffe went 3-for-4 with two RBI for the Twins, who had their three- game winning streak halted.

With the Tigers down two and runners at the corners in the top of the fifth, May induced a timely double play off the bat of Miguel Cabrera. A run scored on the play to cut the deficit to 4-3.

Detroit then went ahead in the sixth with a two-run inning. Castellanos singled and Bryan Holaday doubled before both scored on Suarez's single. Castellanos then added a two-run single an inning later.

Kennys Vargas hit an RBI groundout for Minnesota in the bottom of the seventh, but Cabrera got the run back with an RBI single in the eighth.

Joe Nathan came on in the ninth and allowed an RBI double to Brian Dozier, but he still managed to convert his 27th save of the season.

Each team pushed a run across in the second. Victor Martinez singled to open the inning and J.D. Martinez followed with a base hit. Holaday sent an RBI single into center two batters later that plated Victor Martinez, then Kurt Suzuki responded with a run-scoring hit in the home half to tie the game.

J.D. Martinez's two-out single in the third plated Hunter to give Detroit another lead, but Minnesota answered again in the home third.

A single by Danny Santana and a walk from Dozier put a pair of runners on preceding Joe Mauer's RBI double. After Verlander struck out Vargas and Oswaldo Arcia, the right-hander couldn't work his way out of trouble, allowing a double to Plouffe that scored Dozier and Mauer for a 4-2 edge.

Game Notes

The Tigers had 15 of their 17 hits go for singles ... Santana hit his sixth triple of the season ... Detroit went 5-for-14 with runners in scoring position, while the Twins went 4-for-15 in such situations.
