In exchange, the A's sent minor league outfielder Jake Goebbert and a player to be named later or cash to San Diego.

He is expected to join the A's on Friday when the team is in Cleveland.

To make room for Blanks on the roster, the A's designated first baseman Daric Barton for assignment.

Barton hit .158 with five RBI this season.

Goebbert, 26, hit .257 with seven doubles, one triple, six home runs, 25 RBI and 21 runs scored in 31 games for Triple-A Sacramento this season. He will be assigned to Triple-A El Paso.
