Oakland, CA (Sports Network) - The Oakland Athletics agreed to terms with manager Bob Melvin on a two-year contract extension on Monday, one which aims to keep him in the East Bay through the 2016 season.

Melvin was named interim manager on June 9, 2011 and then was rewarded with a three-year contract through the 2014 season in September of that year.

He led the A's to a 94-68 record and surprise AL West title in 2012, beating out the high-powered Angels and Rangers before losing a five-game ALDS to the Detroit Tigers. Melvin was selected as the AL manager of the year for his efforts.

A native of nearby Palo Alto, California, Melvin has also managed the Seattle Mariners and Arizona Diamondbacks. He holds an overall record of 634-628 in nine seasons as a big league skipper.

The 51-year-old was a journeyman catcher for 10 seasons in the majors with the Tigers, Giants, Orioles, Royals, Red Sox, Yankees and White Sox. He hit .233 with 35 homers and 212 runs batted in from 1985-94.
