Atlanta, GA ( - The Atlanta Braves are set to leave Turner Field after the 2016 season and will move into a new home in nearby Cobb County.

The new ballpark, which will still have an Atlanta address, will be located at the northwest intersection of Interstate-75 and I-285. It will also have other transportation options.

"We believe the new stadium location is easy to access while also giving our fans a first-rate game day experience in and around the ballpark and making it a 365-day-a-year destination," said Braves President John Schuerholz in a statement Monday.

Turner Field, which is owned by the City of Atlanta and the Atlanta-Fulton County Recreation Authority, has been the Braves' home since 1997. It was built for the 1996 Olympics and scaled down for the baseball team. The club's 20-year lease is set to expire at the conclusion of the 2016 campaign.

The Braves said Turner Field needs about $150 million in renovations, including seat replacement and lighting upgrades. The team also said the lack of consistent mass transit to the facility, lack of adequate parking, lack of access to major roadways and lack of control over the development of the surrounding area were issues that went into the decision to look for a new home.

"The Braves have kept us apprised of their stadium situation throughout this process," said MLB commissioner Bud Selig in a statement. "Major League Baseball fully supports their decision to move to a new ballpark in Atlanta for the 2017 season, and we look forward to their continued excellence representing their community, both on and off the field."

Construction of the new stadium is scheduled to start in the second half of 2014 with completion for the start of the 2017 campaign.

The estimated cost of the building, parking and related infrastructure is roughly $672 million. The Braves will be a significant investor, along with Cobb County, in the project.
