St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - The Pittsburgh Pirates placed starting catcher Russell Martin on the 15-day disabled list Saturday due to a hamstring strain he sustained the previous night.

Martin left in the sixth inning of Friday's 1-0 Pirates' loss to the Cardinals in St. Louis with the injury. The veteran backstop had just returned to the lineup after sitting out Pittsburgh's prior two games with the team had described as a lower-body injury.

The three-time All-Star has hit .242 with two home runs and 11 RBI over 16 games thus far this season.

Fellow catcher Tony Sanchez was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis and will start Saturday's game against the Cardinals. The former first-round pick went 6-for-18 with four RBI with the Pirates earlier this season before recently being sent back to the minors.
