Jupiter, FL (Sports Network) - The St. Louis Cardinals have extended the contract of general manager John Mozeliak for three years and picked up the 2014 option on the contract of manager Mike Matheny.

Mozeliak is set to enter his sixth season as Cardinals GM. His contract was due to expire at the conclusion of the 2013 campaign and the new deal will take him through 2016.

"I am pleased that we will be keeping our baseball leadership in the front office and on the field together for at least the next two years," said Cardinals chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. "Mo has done an excellent job over the past five years and I have enjoyed working closely with him. We share the same vision for the Cardinals; continued excellence at the major league level, while insuring future success with a strong player procurement and development program."

Mozeliak has been a member of the Cardinals' front office since 1995.

"I'm grateful to work with Bill DeWitt and his ownership group and I know it is a privilege working for such an historic franchise as the Cardinals," said Mozeliak.

The Cardinals have reached the postseason three times under Mozeliak, winning the 2011 World Series title.

Matheny took over in the St. Louis dugout following Tony La Russa's retirement after the 2011 campaign and guided the club to a record of 88-74 last year in his first managerial position. The Cardinals won the first-ever NL wild card game over Atlanta, then beat Washington in the Division Series before falling to eventual World Series champion San Francisco in a seven-game NLCS.

"We are also excited to extend Mike's tenure for at least the next two years," added DeWitt. "He did a remarkable job as a first-year manager, coming within one win of making the World Series."

Matheny was the first rookie manager to lead the Cardinals to the postseason since Eddie Dyer in 1946.
