New York, NY (Sports Network) - Major League Baseball Players Association executive director Michael Weiner announced on Tuesday that Tony Clark has been elevated to the role of deputy executive director.

The move was unanimous, as Clark was approved by a vote of 26-0. The 41-year- old has served as MLBPA director of player relations since March of 2010.

"Tony's rise within the Union will come as no surprise to those who know him," said Weiner. "It was clear from the moment Tony joined the MLBPA that his on- field experience and passion for the fraternity of players would make him a tremendous advocate for all who play the game. I look forward to working closely with Tony as together we represent the interests of the players."

A 15-year veteran who suited up for six clubs, Clark was active in union affairs as a player, serving as a club player representative for the Red Sox and Diamondbacks and spent his last several seasons as an associate player representative.

"I am honored by this appointment and consider it a privilege to be in a position to work more closely with Michael Weiner," stated Clark. "I also look forward to continue working with all our members and the entire Union staff, and together we will maintain our standing as one of the best labor organizations in the country."

Adding Clark at the top level of the union will serve as a buffer since Weiner, who has held his position since taking over for Don Fehr in December of 2009, is in the midst of a prolonged battle with brain cancer.
