Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - The New York Mets announced prior to Friday's start of a three-game series versus the Philadelphia Phillies that starting pitcher Jonathon Niese has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a partially torn left rotator cuff.
Niese left Thursday's game against the Atlanta Braves with discomfort in his shoulder after lasting 3 1/3 innings. On his final pitch, he winced in pain and immediately motioned towards his shoulder.
The 26-year-old lefty has a 3-6 record with a 4.32 ERA and 49 strikeouts in 14 starts this season.
To fill the available roster spot, the Mets recalled right-handed hurler Greg Burke from Triple-A Las Vegas and made him available for tonight's contest. The 30-year-old began the season with the big league club but has been optioned twice this year, compiling a 0-1 record and 4.05 ERA over 21 appearances.
Burke went 1-1 with a 6.55 ERA in nine games with the 51s this season.
