Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - The Washington Nationals have avoided arbitration with offseason acquisition Doug Fister, agreeing to terms on a contract for 2014.

The Nationals obtained the pitcher in a December trade with the Detroit Tigers.

Fister, who turns 30 on Tuesday, is part of a stacked starting rotation that includes Stephen Strasburg, Gio Gonzalez and Jordan Zimmermann.

The 6-foot-8 right-hander won a career-high 14 games and compiled a 3.67 earned run average in 32 starts and one relief appearance for the Tigers last season.

Fister's career record may be below .500 (44-50), but he boasts a respectable 3.53 ERA in 127 starts and three relief outings for Seattle and Detroit. He was 3-2 with a 2.98 ERA in the playoffs over the last three years for the Tigers.
