Boston, MA (Sports Network) - The Boston Red Sox have acquired right-handed pitcher Jake Peavy in a three-team deal with the Chicago White Sox and Detroit Tigers.

The Red Sox receive the former Cy Young Award winner and sent minor league pitchers J.B. Wendelken and Francelis Montas and infielder Cleuluis Rondon to the White Sox.

Boston received right-handed pitcher Brayan Villarreal and outfielder Avisail Garcia from the Tigers for shortstop Jose Iglesias. The Red Sox then sent Garcia to the White Sox.

The 32-year-old Peavy will be a welcome addition to the Red Sox, who finished Tuesday a half-game behind Tampa Bay for first place in the AL East.

The three-time All-Star and 2007 NL Cy Young Award winner while with San Diego, Peavy has gone 8-4 with a 4.28 ERA in 13 starts this season for the White Sox. He has 76 strikeouts compared to 17 walks.

Peavy was on the disabled list this year with a fracture of his left fourth anterior rib. He has won both of his starts since being activated.

A two-time ERA champion in the NL, Peavy began his career with the San Diego Padres in 2002 and is that franchise's all-time leader in strikeouts. His career record stands at 128-97 with a 3.49 ERA in 296 games, all but one of which have been starts. He joined the White Sox in a trade in 2009.

The 26-year-old Villarreal is 0-2 with a 20.77 ERA in seven appearances this season. He is 4-8 with a 4.56 ERA in 73 appearances, all in relief, in his career. He was on the disabled list with Toledo, and was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket, where he will stay on the DL.

Garcia, who is 22, was hitting .374 this season with five homers and 23 RBVI in 33 games for Triple-A Toledo. He has appeared in 30 games for the parent club this year and has hit .241. Garcia will be assigned to Triple-A Charlotte.

"Garcia is a very young, five-tool player who already has spent time in the major leagues," said Rick Hahn, White Sox senior vice president/general manager. "Our scouts are extremely optimistic about his future and view him as a potential impact talent for many years to come."

The 23-year-old Iglesias has batted .330 with one home run and 19 RBI in 63 games this year. He's made 34 appearances at third base (33 starts) and 29 at shortstop (27 starts) and paces all AL rookies in average.

The Tigers got Iglesias as insurance in case Jhonny Peralta is suspended by MLB due to the Biogenesis investigation.

Wendelken, 20, is 2-0 with a 2.77 ERA and 10 saves for Single-A Greenville. Montas, also 20, is 2-9 with a 5.07 ERA in 19 games (18 starts) for Greenville. Rondon, 19, has batted .276 with a home run and 10 RBI in 37 games with Short-A Lowell.
