Oakland, CA (Sports Network) - The Boston Red Sox made a move to solidify their bullpen on Friday by acquiring lefty Matt Thornton from the Chicago White Sox.

The Red Sox also got cash in the deal for Thornton, while sending minor league outfielder Brandon Jacobs to the White Sox.

Thornton has an 0-3 record with a 3.86 ERA in 40 appearances this season, his 10th in the majors. The 36-year-old began his career in Seattle and had spent the past eight years with the White Sox.

Over his career, Thornton is 32-41 with 23 saves a 3.53 ERA in 586 appearances, all but one of them in relief. He was an All-Star in 2010 and is the White Sox all-time leader in relief appearances (512).

Jacobs, a 10th round draft pick by the Red Sox in 2009, started this season at High-A Salem and was promoted to Double-A Portland in late June. The 23-year- old has a combined batting average of .246 with 11 homers and 44 RBI in 83 games.

To make room for Thornton on the 40-man roster, the Red Sox moved left-hander Andrew Miller (left foot sprain) to the 60-day disabled list.
