Pittsburgh, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Detroit Tigers right-hander Justin Verlander was removed from Monday's 11-6 loss against the Pittsburgh Pirates shortly after surrendering five first-inning runs.

The Tigers said Verlander was taken out due to right shoulder soreness. He will have an MRI on Tuesday.

"Warming up, long tossing and then going to the bullpen, it (shoulder) didn't feel great," Verlander said. "Then it started to loosen up a little bit toward the end of my bullpen. When I got on the mound there were no sharp pains or anything. The ball wasn't coming out of my hand good at all."

Verlander (10-11) has never been on the disabled list in his career and has never missed a start due to injury.

For Verlander, the 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young Award winner, it was the shortest start of his career. He was charged with four hits and four earned runs, while walking two and fanning three. His ERA climbed to 4.76.

Two Detroit errors aided the Pirates in the first inning, during which Verlander was checked on by manager Brad Ausmus and head trainer Kevin Rand. Verlander not only stayed in to finish the inning, but put down a sacrifice bunt in the top of the second. Justin Miller, who was promoted from Triple-A Toledo earlier in the day, appeared on the mound to start the bottom of the inning.

The Tigers were hoping Verlander could go deep into Monday's game, considering they played 19 innings Sunday in a 6-5 loss at Toronto.

"I just didn't feel great," Verlander said. "It's disappointing. On a night the team really needed me, it was the toughest game I've ever had to watch."

This marked the ninth time this season Verlander has given up at least four earned runs in a game.

Buck Farmer will make his major league debut by starting on the mound Wednesday for the Tigers. They pushed back Rick Porcello to Friday because he pitched in Sunday's game.
