Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - The New York Yankees activated shortstop Derek Jeter from the 15-day disabled list prior to Monday's opener of a three-game set in Toronto against the Blue Jays.

Jeter's latest trip to the DL, his third this season, stemmed from a right calf strain and lingering soreness in his quad that forced him to the DL back on Aug. 3.

The Yankee captain has played in just five games this season due to various leg ailments. He was sidelined for more than three months by a fractured ankle he suffered during the ALCS, then injured his right quadriceps in his return to action during a July 11 matchup against Kansas City.

The veteran shortstop sat out more than two weeks with that ailment before re- joining the team on July 28, but missed the final two games of New York's series at San Diego before heading to the disabled list.

In 19 at-bats over his five games this season, Jeter has collected four hits -- including a homer -- while knocking in two runs and scoring three times.

To make room for Jeter on the roster, New York optioned pitcher Preston Claiborne to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Claiborne made his major league debut with New York on May 5 and has appeared in 37 games this season, compiling an 0-1 record with a 2.78 earned run average.
