Recap: Atlanta vs. Washington

Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - The Washington Wizards were fingertips away from notching their first win of the season.

But the Wizards' worst start in franchise history remains intact after the Atlanta Hawks prevailed in overtime, 101-100, at Philips Arena.

Kyle Korver drained the last of his five 3-pointers to put Atlanta ahead with 1.9 seconds left in the extra session.

Coming out of a timeout, Washington's Kevin Seraphin fired up a hook shot from the elbow that was short. Teammate Martell Webster secured the ball in mid-air and appeared to stun the Hawks with his putback.

However, replays showed Webster still had possession when the backboard became illuminated.

"Well, I don't know how (the officials) counted it," said Wizards coach Randy Wittman. "Then they come back and say it's not good, which you have to determine because if it's that close...our video shows its good. I don't know. Obviously, there's two different videos, but what are you going to do?"

The Wizards became the 13th team in NBA history to lose their first 10 games.

Josh Smith had a double-double of 25 points and 12 rebounds for the Hawks.

"A lot of guys came through and made some big plays," Korver said.

Al Horford fell a rebound shy of a triple-double, finishing with 15 points and a career-high 10 assists, but missed four critical free throws in overtime.

Washington, though, bailed him out by its inability to rebound.

Seraphin compiled 21 points and 10 boards for the Wizards, who have dropped nine in a row at Atlanta.

A.J. Price gave Washington an 89-86 lead with a putback of a Nene miss inside the final two minutes of regulation. Nene made his season debut after being sidelined because of plantar fasciitis in his left foot.

Smith was called for a charge on the next Atlanta possession, but Jeff Teague scored for the Hawks on a drive to the hoop after Price missed from beyond the arc.

Seraphin and Horford traded misses before Nene made 1-of-2 free throws with 10.3 seconds remaining.

Nene then fouled Devin Harris, who had inbounded the ball and taken a return feed from Horford and attempted to drive to the basket. Harris made both foul shots with 3.7 left, and the game went to overtime when Washington's Shaun Livingston put up a hurried three that grazed the front of the rim as the shot-clock expired.

Trevor Ariza knocked down a trey to put Washington up 98-94 early in the extra frame.

Horford came up empty at the charity stripe with 1:05 to play, but DeShawn Stevenson snagged the offensive rebound and Teague hit a turnaround jumper.

With the Hawks trailing by two, Horford had an opportunity to tie the game, but once again, couldn't connect at the foul line. He wound up making only one of his 10 free throw attempts on the night.

Atlanta was given new life when Washington failed to corral the rebound and lost the ball out of bounds. On the ensuing Hawks possession, Horford managed to get free and Stevenson fed him underneath for the game-tying layup with 19.5 seconds remaining.

Seraphin responded by nailing a jumper with 7.3 seconds left, setting up the chaotic finish.

A back-and-forth first half ended with the Hawks, who were up by as many as 10, holding a 50-47 edge. The Wizards were down 68-66 after closing out the third quarter on an 11-2 burst.
