Irving, TX (Sports Network) - The Dallas Cowboys have released safety Gerald Sensabaugh in an effort to clear salary cap space.

Sensabaugh spent four seasons with the Cowboys and signed a five-year contract extension in December 2011. He announced the news via Twitter on Monday.

"Been informed I'm being released for cap purposes...had a great run #CowboyNation I appreciate the organization and my teammates," Sensabaugh wrote.

Sensabaugh started 15 games for the Cowboys in 2012 and compiled 58 tackles without an interception. He had eight picks in his first three seasons with Dallas.

The 29-year-old North Carolina product spent his first four NFL seasons with Jacksonville and has 14 career interceptions.
