Green Bay, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - The Green Bay Packers announced Monday that Brett Favre will be inducted into the team's Hall of Fame in 2015.

Favre's No. 4 jersey will be retired at the Packers Hall of Fame induction banquet next July. Then, the Packers will have a ceremony at a game with Favre and his family unveiling his name and No. 4 on the north facade of Lambeau Field.

The announcement took place in the new Hall of Fame under construction in the Lambeau Field Atrium, featuring in-person remarks from Packers Hall of Fame Inc. president Perry Kidder, Packers president Mark Murphy and former Packers president Bob Harlan, who is a member of the Packers Hall of Fame executive committee.

Favre, who played 16 seasons with the Packers from 1992-2007, confirmed the news Sunday night in a statement on his website. He did not appear at Monday's announcement but spoke via telephone.

"Wow, I'm speechless. I'm honored, and I mean that from the bottom of my heart," Favre said. "To be able to play 16 wonderful years in Green Bay was an amazing honor. There's no place like it."

Favre also said he would like to come back for a game and flip the opening coin toss with Bart Starr.

After Green Bay acquired the Southern Mississippi product from Atlanta, where he spent his rookie campaign of 1991, the once-proud franchise again began to flourish.

The Packers, who had made the playoffs just twice after winning the first two Super Bowl titles, became contenders again under Favre. The Packers made the playoffs in Favre's second season with the team and won Super Bowl XXXI after the 1996 season, then lost to Denver in Super Bowl XXXII the following year.

Favre won three MVP awards with the Packers and his last game in Green Bay ended with an overtime loss to the New York Giants in the NFC Championship Game.

"He played the toughest, most demanding position in the toughest league," Harlan said. "He was the greatest competitor I've ever been around."

After his first retirement announcement, Favre quickly wanted to come back. The Packers, though, had committed to Aaron Rodgers and would not trade Favre to his preferred destination of Minnesota. Instead, he went to the Jets.

In a different offensive system with New York, Favre had his ups and downs. He led the Jets to an 8-3 start, but arm troubles apparently began to crop up, although he didn't admit to it at the time, and the Jets stumbled down the stretch with just one more win to finish 9-7 and just short of a playoff berth.

Following another retirement announcement in February of 2009, Favre obtained his release from the Jets' retirement list and was eligible to sign with another team. He said his retirement was official, but things changed again when the Vikings lured him back.

Favre played two seasons with Minnesota before hanging up the cleats for good.

"I was always a Packer. I played my heart out each and every year I played, and I'm proud of that," Favre said.

The ultimate gunslinger, Favre was selected to 11 Pro Bowls. He's the NFL's all-time leader in passing touchdowns (508), passing yards (71,838) and completions (6,300).
