East Rutherford, NJ (Sports Network) - New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul underwent back surgery Tuesday morning.

According to the Giants' website, Pierre-Paul had a herniated disc in his lower back repaired by Dr. Robert Watkins during a procedure in California.

"Jason has been experiencing lower back pain the past couple months," Giants senior vice president of medical services Ronnie Barnes was quoted as saying on the club's website. "He has managed the discomfort with treatment and core strengthening exercises. Last week, he was examined by Drs. Russell Warren and Frank Cammisa at the Hospital for Special Surgery. Both felt this procedure was the most prudent course of action. Dr. Watkins, after examining Jason (Monday), agreed. We expect a full and complete recovery."

A full recovery and rehab timetable for Pierre-Paul is about 12 weeks, meaning the three-year veteran out of South Florida should be ready for the start of the regular season in September.

Pierre-Paul had a breakout season in 2011 with 16 1/2 sacks and 86 tackles in 16 games, but managed only 6 1/2 sacks with 66 tackles in 2012. He has 27 1/2 sacks in 48 games over three NFL seasons.
