East Rutherford, NJ ( - Josh Freeman's stay with the New York Giants lasted just over a month, with the team releasing the once- promising quarterback on Friday.

The former Tampa Bay Buccaneers starter, signed by the Giants on April 21 after drawing little interest on the free-agent market, was cut loose to make room on the offseason roster for offensive tackle Rogers Gaines, claimed by New York off waivers from the Chicago Bears.

Freeman's departure leaves 2013 draft pick Ryan Nassib and journeyman Curtis Painter as the sole backups behind Eli Manning under center.

The 17th overall choice of the 2009 draft, Freeman began last season as the No. 1 quarterback for the Buccaneers but struggled in the club's first three games. He completed just 45.7 percent of his passes for 571 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions before being benched in favor of rookie Mike Glennon.

Tampa Bay released Freeman in early October, just one day after Sports Illustrated reported that he had been fined twice for conduct detrimental to the team. One was for an unauthorized interview with ESPN and the other for skipping at least one team meeting.

Freeman quickly signed with Minnesota following his tumultuous exodus from Tampa and was immediately inserted into a starting role for a Week 7 contest against the Giants. He completed just 20-of-53 passes for 190 yards with an interception in the game, which the Vikings lost by a 23-7 score.

The 26-year-old also sustained a concussion during the defeat and did not play another down for Minnesota.

Freeman compiled a 24-35 record over his four-plus seasons as Tampa Bay's starter, throwing for 13,534 yards and 80 touchdowns with 66 interceptions.

Gaines signed with the Bears as an undrafted free agent last season and spent the majority of the 2013 campaign on Chicago's practice squad.
