Florham Park, NJ (Sports Network) - The New York Jets will conclude their turbulent regular season with yet another quarterback change, and it still is not in favor of Tim Tebow.
At his Thursday press conference, Jets head coach Rex Ryan revealed that Greg McElroy will not start on Sunday due to a concussion. Instead, Ryan will start Mark Sanchez under center for New York when the team travels to Buffalo to play the Bills.
After getting sacked 11 times in the Jets' loss to San Diego this past Sunday, McElroy withheld symptoms of a concussion from team trainers, but passed along the information after experiencing a headache while weightlifting Thursday morning.
"Look, I admire Greg's courage and everything else -- you have to be truthful -- and I think that's the lesson learned here -- with the medical staff," said Ryan.
"The fact that he really wanted to play, I understand the competitive side of Greg and all that, but the most important thing's the health of the players. Obviously, I just feel fortunate that something like this showed up without him going out there again and putting himself in harm's way."
After the Jets' postseason hopes were slashed in a Week 15 loss to the Tennessee Titans, Sanchez was benched in favor of McElroy, but will now get yet another opportunity as the team's starter.
Sanchez has struggled mightily in his fourth year as the Jets' signal caller, especially as of late. In his last three starts, he has thrown just one touchdown pass to seven interceptions while also losing two fumbles.
In the game against the Titans which ultimately led to his benching, Sanchez completed just 13-of-28 throws for 131 yards. He tossed a touchdown pass, but threw four interceptions and fumbled on New York's final possession.
