Renton, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks have rewarded head coach Pete Carroll with a three-year contract extension.

General manager John Schneider made the announcement Friday at a news conference.

Carroll guided the Seahawks to a record of 13-3 and their first Super Bowl victory in franchise history last season, culminating in a 43-8 demolition of the Denver Broncos back in February. He was set to enter the final season of a five-year contract he signed before the 2010 campaign.

"This is a very special day," said Carroll at Friday's news conference. "This is a day of gratitude for me. It's really exciting because it's a statement of our commitment, of our staying power."

Carroll has a record of 38-26 during his four-year tenure with three playoff appearances, including two NFC West titles. The Seahawks have been especially dominant the past two years with a 24-8 mark.

"We've had a really good run and we think we're in the middle of something special here," Carroll added. "Our young players, our young leaders ... have bought into our program. I'm just thrilled to be part of it."

With the Super Bowl victory, Carroll joined Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer as the only coaches to win a collegiate national championship and a Super Bowl title. He guided Southern California to a pair of college championships during a highly successful nine-year run before taking the Seahawks' job.

Carroll had two previous tries as an NFL head coach, with the New York Jets in 1994 and the New England Patriots from 1997-99, and owns a career regular- season record of 71-57 in eight years.
