Recap: Philadelphia vs. Washington

Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Nick Foles threw for 298 yards and ran for a score while LeSean McCoy had 77 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries for the Philadelphia Eagles, who snapped a 10-game losing streak at home with a 24-16 win over the Washington Redskins.

Philadelphia (6-5) jumped out to a 24-0 lead through three quarters and held off a late Washington surge to get its first win at Lincoln Financial Field since Sept. 30 of last year against the New York Giants. With the win, the Eagles moved a half-game over the idle Cowboys for first place in the NFC East.

Robert Griffin III led a furious fourth quarter comeback for Washington (3-7) and finished with 264 yards on 17-of-35 passing with two touchdowns and an interception.

Griffin's lone interception came on Washington's final drive of the game. The march started on its own 4-yard line after a 70-yard punt from Donnie Jones. Santana Moss made a 28-yard reception on 3rd-and-25 following a facemask penalty on fellow wideout Pierre Garcon. Griffin led Washington to the Eagles 18, and on 3-and-1, was hurried and tossed a prayer off his back foot into the waiting arms of Brandon Boykin.

"The biggest thing we are doing offensively is we're not turning the ball over and we're not putting ourselves in bad situations," said Eagles head coach Chip Kelly. "If our defense can continue to create them like they are and we are smart not spitting them out on offense then we got a shot."

Foles opened the scoring for Philadelphia late in the first quarter. Starting from its own 32-yard line, Foles hit Zach Ertz across the middle for 15 yards on the first play and then completed a 49-yard pass to McCoy down to the Washington 4.

After an incompletion on first down, Foles ran a read option, kept the ball as most of the Redskins defense followed McCoy off the left side, and stretched across the goal line for the score.

Philadelphia opened up the second quarter at the Washington 43 with a pass short left to Brent Celek who raced past numerous Washington players down to the Washington 1-yard line.

The play was originally ruled a touchdown, but his left knee was down just before he reached into the end zone. McCoy rushed up the middle for a 1-yard touchdown following the review and the Eagles led 14-0.

Griffin manufactured an 11-play, 70-yard drive down to the Philadelphia 5-yard line, until Connor Barwin sacked Griffin and forced a fumble which was recovered by Fletcher Cox.

Foles completed a 23-yard pass to Riley Cooper and a 24-yard pass to Bryce Brown later in the drive to lead the Eagles inside the red zone.

McCoy then rushed the left end for 16 yards, cutting his way through opposing players and dove down at the Washington 7-yard line. He was shaken up on the play, grabbing his hamstring and did not return until the start of the second half. Philadelphia settled for a 24-yard field goal from Alex Henery.

The Eagles received the ball out of the locker room and Foles led a methodical 13-play, 80-yard drive capped by another 1-yard run from McCoy.

Philadelphia was a yard short of the first down after Jason Avant made a juggling catch at the Washington 38 and Kelly did not hesitate to go for it, leaving the offense on the field and Brown surged up the middle for the first down to keep the march alive.

Foles completed a crossing pattern to DeSean Jackson for 22 yards on the following play and McCoy punched it in three plays later.

Washington's offense continued to sputter. After Griffin completed a short pass to Nick Williams for a first down, Trent Cole sacked Washington's signal- caller for the second time which forced Washington to punt, yet again.

In the opening minutes of the fourth, Washington had the ball at midfield and Cox made a big stop on 3rd-and-2 by stuffing Griffin on an option play. Washington had no other choice but to go for it on fourth down. Griffin ran a play-action fake to Alfred Morris but threw it low to Logan Paulsen for an incomplete pass.

The Eagles then turned it over on downs on their ensuing possession at the Washington 38 and Griffin got the Redskins on the board with a 62-yard touchdown to Darrel Young.

Griffin kept the play alive, which he did for most of the day, rolling out to his left and lofting it up to his fullback, who was covered by Cole. Young split Cole and Patrick Chung and bolted into the end zone for Washington's first score.

The Redskins added a two-point conversion courtesy of a Williams reception and trailed, 24-8.

"Our guys fought hard in the fourth quarter," said Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan. "We fought hard in that second half, but when you're on the road, you have to play a full 60 minutes."

Following an Eagles punt that chewed up four minutes of clock, the Redskins started from their own 20 and scored in 2:40. Aldrick Robinson caught a 19- yard pass to reach midfield and then followed that up with a 41-yard touchdown pass two plays later.

Robinson adjusted on an underthrown pass from Griffin, came back to the ball in the end zone and made the catch inches away from hitting the turf.

Griffin ran in the two-point conversion attempt to cut the lead to its final margin, 24-16.

In 2013, the Montana State Bobcats made a bit of an offensive switch, going from a pass-heavy system to a more run- integrated style of play. The reason wasn't because the team was unstable at quarterback, but rather due to the fact the Bobcats were loaded at the running back position.
