Recap: Washington vs. Kansas City

Landover, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Dexter McCluster returned a punt for a touchdown and Quintin Demps did the same on a kickoff to highlight a 38-point first half that led the Kansas City Chiefs to a 45-10 rout of the Washington Redskins Sunday at a wintry FedEx Field.

Alex Smith passed for 137 yards and a pair of scores on 14-of-20 efficiency for the Chiefs (10-3), who put the brakes on a three-game skid in emphatic fashion. Jamaal Charles ended with a game-high 151 yards rushing and a TD on 19 attempts and also caught a pass for another touchdown.

"It seems like a year (since we last won)," Kansas City head coach Andy Reid remarked. "Those are dog years, as you would say, each week that you have a loss in the NFL. So for the guys to come back and rebound after that, I was proud of them."

Dwayne Bowe added 69 yards and a receiving score on four grabs.

Robert Griffin III was an ineffective 12-of-26 for 164 yards, including a touchdown to Logan Paulsen and a pick for the Redskins (3-10), who skidded to their fifth consecutive loss. Kirk Cousins finished the contest 7-of-16 for 59 yards.

"It's tough," Griffin said of being replaced. "You want to be out there with your guys, but I understood the decision."

Aldrick Robinson totaled 67 yards on four receptions for Washington, while Evan Royster exited in the first half with a high left ankle sprain and did not return.

The Chiefs moved to the Redskins' 15 on their first drive of the contest and came away with Ryan Succop's 33-yard field goal. After the Redskins faltered on the second third down of the following series, a 57-yard punt return from McCluster gave the visitors the ball on the 13-yard line.

Five plays later, Charles rolled in from the two and KC quickly led 10-0.

Griffin was picked off by Derrick Johnson six plays into the next series, and the Chiefs had the ball at the Washington 25 after a 40-yard return. Bowe capped that brief drive with a 21-yard catch-and-run to paydirt to make it 17-0.

A three-and-out by the Redskins and another solid McCluster return early in the second quarter gave the Chiefs the ball at the hosts' 41-yard line. Smith connected with Charles for a 5-yard score and 24-0 margin five snaps later.

Griffin then coughed up the ball deep in his own territory, with Demps scooping it up and running into the end zone from 16 yards away. However, replay reversed the call and forced the Redskins to punt.

It turned out to be a bad choice, as McCluster took Sav Rocca's boot and returned it 74 yards the other way for a 31-0 score.

Griffin recovered later in the quarter by hitting Paulsen for a 7-yard TD pass, but Demps returned the ensuing kickoff 95 yards and Kansas City took a 38-10 advantage into the break after Washington's Kai Forbath hit from 50 yards away on the final play.

It marked the first time the Chiefs recorded a punt and kickoff TD in the same game since Dante Hall accomplished both against St. Louis on Dec. 8, 2002.

"Field position was great all day between defense and special teams," said Smith. "We had great starting position, and your chances to score go way up. We jumped on these guys early and kept going."

Succop missed a 34-yard try on the Chiefs' second drive of the third quarter, but Washington was still unable to mount any significant attack.

Three plays into the fourth quarter, Kansas City's Knile Davis picked up a 17- yard TD run to make it a 45-10 contest.

"I take full responsibility for this game today," Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan said. "I need to do a better job getting these guys ready to play."
