Recap: NY Jets vs. Oakland

East Rutherford, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - Chris Ivory rumbled 71 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter and Geno Smith threw for a score, as the New York Jets began their season with a 19-14 victory over the Oakland Raiders.

Smith connected on 23-of-28 passes for 221 yards and was picked off once. Ivory gained 102 yards on 10 carries for the Jets (1-0), who were coming off an 8-8 season.

Derek Carr, who got the start instead of veteran Matt Schaub, tossed a pair of TD passes. Carr, the younger brother of former No. 1 overall draft David Carr, completed 20-of-32 passes for 151 yards.

The Raiders (0-1) suffered their 15th straight loss in the Eastern time zone. Their last such victory came Dec. 6, 2009 in Pittsburgh.

New York held a decisive 402-158 advantage in total yards, but the game was decided until the final two minutes.

"To our standards, we know we can play better, we know we have to play better," Jets coach Rex Ryan said.

On the first play after a Raiders punt, Ivory broke free up the middle and plowed through would-be tacklers before barely reaching the end zone with 8:03 left in the game. The 2-point conversion try came up short when David Nelson was tackled at the 1, leaving the Jets with a 19-7 cushion.

James Jones made an incredible touchdown grab with 1:21 remaining on a 30-yard pass from Carr. Jones, in tight coverage with Darrin Walls, cradled the ball with one hand as he was falling out of bounds on the right side of the end zone.

Greg Salas fell on the ensuing onsides kick, and the Jets killed off the remaining time.

"Tough loss on the road, not the way we wanted to start off our season," said Raiders head coach Dennis Allen. "There's obviously some things that we still have to work on, some things we have to get better at."

Saalim Hakim returned the opening kickoff 44 yards, and the Jets opened the scoring with Nick Folk's 45-yard field goal to cap the game's first possession. Folk was forced to make a kick 10 yards longer than his original attempt due to a holding call.

Defensive back Charles Woodson, in his 17th NFL season, picked off Smith's pass attempt to Eric Decker on New York's next series. That gave Oakland the ball at the 28, and Carr used the short field to his advantage when he connected with Rod Streater on a pass to the left side for a 12-yard score on a 3rd-and-5 play.

The Jets were in prime position to go ahead early in the second, but Smith, on a scramble to the right, was hit hard and T.J. Carrie recovered the fumble for the Raiders at the 4.

Smith, though, capitalized on another opportunity by driving the Jets 80 yards in 12 plays. He culminated the march with a 5-yard shovel pass to Chris Johnson for a TD and a 10-7 lead with 30 seconds remaining in the half. The third-down scoring play came immediately after the Jets tried some trickery with Michael Vick throwing incomplete to the end zone to a wide-open Decker.

Folk banged through a 42-yard kick with 2:38 remaining in the third quarter, but the Jets wasted an opportunity to push the lead to two possessions early in the fourth. Facing a 3rd-and-3 from the Oakland 20, Smith was sacked by Tyvon Branch for a 19-yard loss. That pushed the Jets out of field goal range.
