Lake Forest, IL ( - The Chicago Bears signed veteran wide receiver Santonio Holmes to a one-year contract on Saturday.

Holmes was released by the New York Jets in March after four years, saving the team a reported $8.25 million in salary for the upcoming season.

To make room for the former Super Bowl MVP, the Bears cut seven-year veteran wide receiver Eric Weems.

Holmes, 30, figures to slot in somewhere behind first stringers Alshon Jeffery Brandon Marshall on the depth chart. No. 3 receiver Marquess Wilson suffered a fractured right clavicle in Monday's training camp practice.

In his fourth season for the Jets, Holmes had 23 catches for 456 yards and one touchdowns over 11 games. He was limited to four games in 2012 after suffering a Lisfranc injury in his left foot.

Holmes was drafted in the first round by Pittsburgh in 2006 and was named the MVP of Super Bowl XLIII in 2009 after making a toe-tapping touchdown catch in the final minute to lead the Steelers over Arizona.

He has 381 career receptions for 5,963 yards and 36 touchdowns in 103 games for the Steelers and Jets. He posted career-highs with 79 catches and 1,248 yards in 2009, the season before the Jets acquired him in a trade.
