San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Former Arizona Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt was named the San Diego Chargers' offensive coordinator on Thursday.

Whisenhunt was fired by the Cardinals on New Year's Eve, one day after the club wrapped up a season that begin with promise. Arizona won its first four games, but recorded only one more victory to end with a 5-11 record.

Whisenhunt amassed a franchise-record 49 wins during his six seasons as the Cardinals' head coach and guided the franchise to its only Super Bowl appearance during the 2008 campaign.

"Ken has a lot of experience and has had much success in the NFL in both Arizona and Pittsburgh," said new Chargers head coach Mike McCoy. "He has a very creative mind and will be a great asset for me and our team. I look forward to working with him."

Prior to joining the Cardinals, Whisenhunt served as the offensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers from 2004-06 and was a staff member of the team that captured the Lombardi Trophy in Super Bowl XL.

McCoy, who spent the previous four seasons as the Denver Broncos' offensive coordinator, was hired by San Diego on Tuesday to replace Norv Turner, fired at the conclusion of this past season after the Chargers failed to reach the playoffs for a third straight year.
